Foreword

Happy Birthday, SYC

Looking back at 1964 when SYC was formed, the idea of starting a singing group must have been uncommon. It was a challenge for the young musicians to come together with the aim of enhancing the standard of music appreciation and performance.

That goal has not changed through the years. In fact, the Choir has built such a strong foundation on these ideals that it has earned a reputation at home and abroad for its unique style which can only be described as "SYC".

As a volunteer organisation, the Choir has the same concerns as other non-profit groups. It has been very fortunate to receive support from many people. The conductors, members, administrators, well-wishers and friends believed in the Choir and gave them the opportunities to pursue that goal.

The concerts and performances the Choir has given, the festivals and competitions they have participated in are countless, and will continue to grow in number. In fact, SYC can claim to be one of the very first organisations to "spread their wings" to venture abroad in 1974. The Choir is one of the most well-travelled performing groups in Singapore.

It is an appropriate time now for the Choir to use the past to plan for the future. The glories of the past are no guarantee of future success. The job of continuing the fine name and tradition of SYC lies in the able hands of the conductor and the vocal chords of the members. It calls for team spirit to achieve this, and this the Choir has in abundance.

Music knows no limit or no boundaries. Good music and musicianship will always be appreciated and admired. The Singapore Youth Choir will live up to the challenge of spreading the joy of choral music, and let the world know what a tiny full-stop on the world map can do.
