Foreword

Singapore Youth Choir

Over their 32-year history, marked by successful concerts and tours, sprinkled with trophies, awards and the odd broadcast recording, the Singapore Youth Choir has come to be known for their exceptional artistry and blend. They have at the same time developed a repertoire as diverse as the choristers themselves. Student, teacher, administrator or auditor, they work together to get Weelkes, Bruckner, Ravel and the Beatles stylistically 'just so'.

Singing here, there and everywhere, the first half of 1996 has been full. Above and beyond the call of twice-weekly practices, the Choir has given a host of performances, including a number at the request of Professor Tommy Koh and one for the President of Singapore and the Cabinet. In addition, they have on several occasions presented an experimental interactive (audience permitting) programme at 500-student assemblies at various schools, as part of their commitment to the National Arts Council Arts Education Programme.

The rest of the year promises to be equally exciting: a new look - kebaya and mandarin jacket; a new destination - Alava, Spain; and finally a place to call 'home' - the YMS Arts Centre. The Choir has much to look foward to as, with a permanent base, plans for growth and consolidation begin to take shape; and as they continue to explore new terrain and to challenge themselves to be at the forefront of the choral field.
