Foreword

Long lauded for their beautiful tone and incomparable blend, the Singapore Youth Choir has its origins in a combined schools choir that performed regularly in local festivals and on Radio Television Singapore. Now approaching 30, they have acquired a wealth of experience and an armful of trophies that lend stature to their reputation as one of the region's best. They have travelled often to faraway places and have rubbed shoulders with choirs around the world in an exuberant exchange of camaraderie and choral singing know-how.

It was during one of these mutual admiration sessions that they met Johannes Meister and Der Kleine Madrigalchor. It began in the stairwell of a canteen, where both the Youth Choir and the Madrigalchor were queuing for lunch between competitions, at the 1984 Cleveland Inter-TIE in Middlesborough, England. It is now unclear as to which of the two choirs burst into song first and which joined in later, but to the strains of "Wade in the Water" filling the rather cramped space, a friendship was born.

Over the years, the bond was maintained via sporadic correspondence, and strengthened during the Youth Choir's brief sojourns in Aachen, Germany (1989) and Lucerne, Switzerland (1991). The Choir is delighted to finally have Johannes here in Singapore, as their guest conductor; and hope that you will find their performance together as rewarding as their liaison has been.
